KNUCKLES #27

Knuckles wasn't the only one sweating his way through this issue, as yours truly was definitely concerned whether or not I could maintain a pace that would sustain readers on so drastically different a story. Reader approval may have proven me right in the long run, but back when I initially wrote this, I wasn't sure which segment I was going to alienate.

Fortunately, I had one ace-in-the-hole. Two, actually. The obvious one was that I had lived through most of this stuff, so I had more than a passing familiarity with the subject matter. It's the second ace, however, that was more important: my son Stephen. At least I had his reaction to guage whether or not boys would actually read the storyline. Since I held his interest, I figured I at least stood a fighting chance with the rest of the male readership.

I also had one other lucky break: Chris Allan was designated the penciller, and his talent for capturing emotion would prove just as pivotal in winning the readers over. When I saw his work on each issue, I was overjoyed, as he depicted everything exactly as I had hoped for and then some.

Not wishing to slight Manny Galan, but he also did an equally bang-up job on the back-up story, wherein Mighty encounters the real Fiona Fox, and we experience more scenes of days gone by.
