STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE #19

I had submitted samples and inquiries to the Malibu Comics offices when it was first announced they were going to do a comics version of STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE. At some point, I actually made person-to-person contact with editor Tom Mason at a comic convention about the possibility of doing a fill-in story as my way of opening the door to further opportunities. Unfortunately, he had all the creators and material he needed at that point, so I chalked that up to "better luck next time".
When I heard through the grapevine a new editor was replacing Tom on DS9 months later, I immediately scrambled and submitted a new package, proposing a story I did with actor Mark Lenard about two years earlier. (At that time, we tried to sell it to editor Alan Gold at DC Comics as a Next Generation story. Check out the BLOOD & HONOR page for all the gory details.) The new editor was Mark Paniccia, and I was hoping my timing was better than last time.
Be careful what you wish for, however. Mark got the package. He liked it, and wanted to do BLOOD & HONOR as a special. He then asked if I'd be interested in pencilling a couple of stories in the meantime while he figured out formats and scheduling in regards to my proposal. As it turned out, the first story I pencilled ended up being in issue #20, while the second one, originally intended for publication in issue #20, was moved up to #19. Little did I know at the time, however, that the road to hell was being paved.
Still, as an added bonus, I even got to pencil and ink my very first STAR TREK cover ever. (Better still, not one editorial change was made at all on the artwork, a rarity among books dealing with licensed properties.)
This story was written by Dan Mishkin and inked by longtime DC Comics Trek inker Arne Starr.
